Professor Ben Frey continues his extraordinary work on the preservation of the Cherokee language. Ben aims to revitalize the language by increasing the number of day-to-day contexts in which it is spoken. Part of this work has involved creating Cherokee-speaking spaces on campus such as Anikawi – the Cherokee coffee hour,” adding “a large part of my work has been in collaboration with New Kituwah Academy – the Cherokee immersion school on the Qualla Boundary.” Professor Dan Cobb’s “Native Peoples of North America” Great Courses contribution, developed in partnership with the Teaching Company and the National Museum of the American Indian, was released this past fall. Professor Annette Rodriguez joins our faculty this coming year.
