American Studies students at every level continue to make wonderful contributions. Students delivered presentations at professional conferences including: the American Studies Association and American Folklore Society. They have won competitive undergraduate and graduate research awards. And, importantly, they have engaged in a broad spectrum of service work benefitting the citizens of North Carolina and beyond. Elijah Gaddis, one of our first two graduating Ph.D. students, along with Professors Bobby Allen and Seth Kotch inaugurated the Community Histories Workshop dedicated to using the resources and expertise at UNC to reveal the important and multifaceted histories of communities across North Carolina. A particular focus of the CHW is working with other university units, property developers, and local cultural heritage organizations to make the adaptive reuse of industrial sites catalysts for community history initiatives.
